Not everyone who has acne will suffer from acne scarring. Any type of acne spot can lead to acne scars, but you are more likely to develop scarring if you suffer from more severe acne over a long period of time.
Acne scarring occurs as a result of the body’s wound-healing response to acne lesions. The severity of your acne spots is just one reason why you may see acne scars forming.
Inflammation – when acne causes inflammation in the skin that surrounds them, it can cause an increase in collagen production. This can lead to scar tissue forming.
Darker skin types – every skin tone can develop acne scarring; however, you can be more likely to have acne scars if you have a darker skin tone. This is due to an increase in melanin during the skin healing process, which leads to post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation.
Picking at your acne – this can make inflammation much worse and cause damage to the surrounding skin. Squeezing at your spots can also stop them from healing properly and lead to acne scars forming.
Genetics – if you have a family member who has suffered or currently suffers from acne scars, you in turn, are more likely to develop acne scarring.
The most common acne scars are atrophic acne scars, of which there are three main types:
The less common types of acne scars are keloid scars or hypertrophic scars. Both of these types of acne scars are characterised by raised and thickened areas of scar tissue.
Keloid scars can extend beyond the acne lesion, whereas hypertrophic scars tend to be the same size as the acne lesion.
Finding the right treatment starts with an initial consultation at Zapp Laser Studio in Bristol. This is where our skin specialists will assess your acne scars and determine the most appropriate treatment that will help you achieve amazing results.
Many clients will have our PicoSure laser skin rejuvenation treatment to treat their acne scars. However, some clients may need a combination of laser treatment with a course of chemical peels.
The PicoSure laser is one of the leading lasers on the market. It is powerful enough to tackle various skin concerns, whilst still being gentle to the surface of your skin. It is the ideal treatment for improving acne scars, skin tone and texture, as well as fine lines and wrinkles.
The laser treatment works by stimulating the production of new collagen and elastin in the skin. This helps to plump your skin and keep it strong and looking healthy. The plumpness of the skin is what helps to smooth away acne scars and give your skin a much more even texture.
You will need more than a single treatment to improve your acne scars. For most people, it will take around three laser sessions to reduce their acne scars. If you have more stubborn or severe acne scarring, you may need more treatments.
During your consultation, we will discuss with you how many sessions will help you achieve the best results.
Chemical peels or skin peels work well on their own or as part of a treatment plan. They work by exfoliating the skin and removing dead skin cells. This makes them an effective skin treatment for tackling oily skin, active acne and some acne scars.
During your treatment, we will apply a chemical solution to your skin. Peels come in different strengths and can include active ingredients such as salicylic acid and hyaluronic acid. By removing dead skin cells, they encourage healthy ones to grow in their place. This helps to make acne scars less visible and gives your skin a fresh glow.
Skin peels can work on most skin types, however deeper peels are not suitable for dark skin types.
This will depend on how severe your acne scars are and if skin peels are recommended as part of a combined treatment package. You will need at least three chemical peels, four weeks apart. Most clients have a course of 3-6 peels to see optimal results.
