Do you have some tattoo ink that you once loved, but that you now no longer want to see? If so, you will be wondering – can you remove a tattoo completely? In short, the answer is yes, you can have your tattoo fully removed. But for this, you will need the help of laser tattoo removal.
While laser treatment is the most effective tattoo removal method, there are a few factors that can have an impact on getting rid of your ink. These include the size of your tattoo, where your tattoo is and your tattoo ink colour.
To help you understand more about how the laser tattoo removal process works, our experts are here to answer your questions. This includes how you can fully remove a tattoo.

The laser tattoo removal process
Your initial consultation
Before getting your tattoo removed, you will need to have a consultation with one of our laser treatment practitioners. This is where we will get to see the size and scale of the tattoo you want removed.
During your appointment, we will check to see if you are suitable for laser tattoo removal. Your practitioner will also show you how laser removal works and let you know how many treatments you will need to completely remove a tattoo.
If your aim is to get a cover up tattoo, we can also create a tailored treatment plan to help fade your existing tattoo.
The laser tattoo removal procedure
When your tattoo artist creates your tattoo, they use a fine needle to apply the ink particles to different depths in your skin. This is why tattoo removal creams do not work, as they cannot target the ink particles in the deeper layers of your skin. They can also cause damage to your skin or pigmentation issues.
Laser tattoo removal, on the other hand, is a safe and effective way to fade or fully remove your tattoo. It uses the light energy from the laser to break down the tattoo ink into smaller particles.
The first few sessions will target ink deeper in the skin and we will work towards the surface of the skin with subsequent sessions. In later sessions, we will decrease the depth, but add more energy.
At Zapp Laser Studio, we use the PicoSure laser treatment. It is one of the most precise and targeted laser treatments for tattoo removal. It helps to break down ink particles much faster so that they are small enough for the body’s immune system to get rid of.
It can also treat all colours on the spectrum, which means that we can completely remove most tattoos with this laser.
After your laser tattoo removal treatment
Following your laser tattoo removal session, you may experience some of the following:
- Redness
- Swelling
- Mild blistering
- Skin feels tender or sensitive
- Itching
This is completely normal, but any reactions should go away within one or two weeks. Your practitioner will provide you with an aftercare guide to help with the healing process and get the most out of your treatment. This will include avoiding heat exposure for the first 72 hours such as hot baths, saunas and sun exposure.
Many of our clients feel fine after laser tattoo removal. While laser treatment is visible, you should be able to go back to your daily activities straight away.
Can you fully remove a tattoo?
To treat your tattooed skin and totally remove a tattoo it can take anywhere from 6-10 treatments. If you have a larger tattoo, it is in a tricky area or it is dark, you may need more than ten laser removal sessions.
Every person is different, and so is every tattoo. This is why we provide in-depth consultation with one of our experts. They will guide you through how many treatments it will take to completely remove your specific tattoo.
Is laser tattoo removal painful?
Laser tattoo removal can be uncomfortable. Our clients often describe it as being more uncomfortable than getting the tattoo in the first place. However, getting a tattoo removed is much faster.
Because the PicoSure laser is more precise, each tattoo session is quick. It all depends on the size of your tattoo. If you have a small tattoo, your treatment session may only take a few seconds. However, if you have a larger or more complex tattoo, it can take up to ten minutes.
We often get the question; Do you use numbing cream? The answer is no, but this is because using it can actually change the texture of your skin and slow down your tattoo removal treatment.
We do, however, use a cryo machine throughout your treatment. This blows cold air onto the treatment area, which cools the skin and makes the process more comfortable.
How much does it cost for complete tattoo removal?
Laser tattoo removal starts from £90 per treatment. The total cost of complete tattoo removal will depend on the size, colour and location of your tattoo. This will impact how many laser treatments you will need.
Your practitioner will work with you to develop a bespoke treatment plan that works for you and your goals. We also offer different payment plans to suit your budget and circumstances. This includes pay-as-you-go and discounted payment plans for a course of treatments.
