Can Tattoos Be Removed?

By dan | Jan 09, 2024 | Laser Tattoo Removal | 0 Comments

Did you get a tattoo when you were younger and now regret it? Does your tattoo no longer have the same meaning and now you want to get rid of it? If so, you are probably asking yourself – can tattoos be removed?

By design, tattoos are supposed to be a permanent decision. But if you want to say goodbye to your tattoo, advancements in laser treatments have made it easier to remove a tattoo.

Laser removal has become a popular option for people looking to remove an unwanted tattoo. It is a simple way to reverse the choice of getting a tattoo. The laser treatment breaks down tattoo ink particles so your body can naturally flush them out. This leaves you with clean and clear skin.

But what happens during the tattoo removal process and will I see complete tattoo removal? Our laser experts are here to give you the lowdown.

Laser tattoo removal: how does it work and what to expect?

Laser tattoo removal is a safe and effective tattoo removal method. It can help to fade or even completely remove your tattoo.

At Zapp Laser Studio, we use the PicoSure laser treatment. It is one of the best laser tattoo removal treatments on the market. It is more powerful than other laser removal methods.

It targets the tattoo ink particles much harder and faster, which means each session is relatively quick. Sometimes as quickly as a few seconds (depending on the size of your tattoo).

It can also treat all colours on the spectrum, which means that we can completely remove most tattoos.

This laser tattoo removal procedure uses light energy to break down ink particles into smaller pieces. This makes it easier for your body’s immune system to naturally remove these particles.

The laser works by first targeting the deeper ink in the skin. In later sessions, we work towards the ink particles on the surface of the skin. As the sessions go on, we decrease the depth of the laser, but add in more energy.

Does laser tattoo removal hurt?

The short answer to this is yes, getting your tattoo removed with laser treatment can be very uncomfortable. Some of our clients even say it is more uncomfortable than when the tattoo artist did the tattoo in the first place.

The good news is that tattoo removal is much faster than getting a tattoo. As an example, one treatment session for smaller tattoos can be a few seconds. whereas for larger tattoos each session can take up to ten minutes.

To make your laser tattoo removal treatment more comfortable, we use a cryo machine throughout your treatment. This blows cold air on the tattooed skin to keep it feeling cool and to counteract the heat created as the laser reacts with the ink particles.

Can unwanted tattoos be removed in one laser session?

Tattoos come in all shapes and sizes. Some are also more intricate than others. Because of this, it is difficult to say how many laser tattoo removal treatment sessions you will need without seeing the tattoo first.

During your consultation, one of our laser experts will assess your skin and tattoo. This will help them determine how many sessions of laser tattoo removal you will need.

The average number of laser removal sessions you will need

  •       2-6 treatments to fade a tattoo or cover it up
  •       6-10 treatments to completely remove a tattoo (depending on size). Larger tattoos can take longer

You will need to wait ten weeks between each session. This is so your body can naturally process and remove the ink particles.

Tattoo removal creams: do they help fade away tattoos?

There are other tattoo removal methods on the market that do not provide you with results. This includes tattoo removal creams. We advise you to stay clear of creams as they do not work and they can cause serious skin reactions or result in pigmentation issues.

Laser tattoo treatment is still the most effective way to fade tattoos or completely remove them.

What are the side effects of laser tattoo removal?

There are a few common side effects from tattoo removal, which are completely normal. They can include redness, swelling, skin irritation or itchiness and mild blistering.

This is all part of the healing process and should go away in 1-2 weeks. Your practitioner will give you advice on how to take care of your skin after your treatment.  Things like avoiding exposure to heat such as hot baths or sun exposure are ways in which you can help get the most out of your treatment.
