By dan | Feb 03, 2025 | Laser Tattoo Removal | 0 Comments

So, you have an unwanted tattoo and want to get rid of it as soon as possible? You are not alone. Many of our clients ask how often you can get laser tattoo removal to completely remove a tattoo.

In short, it is not about the speed of the laser removal sessions. Fast does not always equal great results. As with any type of laser treatment, tattoo removal is not one-size-fits-all. Your skin type, location of your tattoo, size and colour are all factors that can impact how long it can take to fade a tattoo or for complete tattoo removal.

To help you understand more about how long unwanted tattoo removal takes, we break down all your burning questions. This includes how laser tattoo removal sessions work and when you can expect to see your results.

Why choose PicoSure for your laser tattoo removal treatment?

With so many laser treatments on the market promising results, how do you know which one will work for you? When it comes to effective tattoo removal, the only choice you should make is PicoSure. Here’s why:

  •       Precisely targets tattoo ink harder and faster than other traditional lasers, which means fewer treatments for you
  •       Is effective on most skin types but works best if your skin tone is type 1-4
  •       Works on tough professional tattoos and cosmetic tattoos such as eyebrow tattoos
  •       Each of your laser sessions will take no longer than 10 minutes
  •       Uses two wavelengths to target and break down all colours in the spectrum including white and blues which are challenging to remove
  •       Is tough on tattoo pigment but without damaging your skin or affecting your skin health

How does laser tattoo removal treatment work?

In the hands of our expert laser technicians, laser tattoo removal treatments are a quick and easy process. We understand how to tailor your treatment to your skin type and type of tattoo.

As we mentioned earlier, darker skin types do not always respond well to laser treatment. Before going ahead, we will do a patch test on your skin to determine if you are suitable for laser tattoo removal.

Laser tattoo removal works by passing the PicoSure device over the tattoo. The device sends

ultra-short bursts of laser light energy at a fast rate into the tattoo ink. This means we can precisely target the tattoo ink without damaging the surrounding tissue.

You will need more than one laser tattoo removal treatment to fade or completely remove your tattoo. One of the reasons is because each session will work in different ways:

  •       The earlier laser sessions focus on targeting ink particles in the deeper layers of the skin.
  •       The laser tattoo removal sessions work on the tattoo ink that sits on the surface of the skin

But what happens after the laser has done its work? This is where your body comes into play and does the rest. Once the laser light energy has broken down and shattered the tattoo ink particles, your body’s immune system will flush them out. This will happen after each of your laser tattoo removal sessions.

How many laser tattoo removal sessions does it take to remove a tattoo?

Now we have come to the question that everyone really wants to know. How many laser tattoo removal treatments will I need? There is no one answer to this, as everyone’s tattoo is different and unique to them.

In the same way, your skin and how you respond to laser tattoo removal will also be different from a friend, family member or colleague. This is why it is important to have an in-depth consultation so that we can assess your tattoo and skin type. From this, we can develop a tailored tattoo removal treatment plan that will give you the results you want.

To help give you an indication of how many treatments you may need of laser tattoo removal you may need, here’s what you can expect:

To fade a tattoo – 2-6 treatment sessions

To fully remove a tattoo – 6-10 treatment sessions

Your sessions will take place every 10 weeks as this gives your skin enough time to heal and your body time to process the broken down ink. However, the longer you leave between tattoo removal sessions, the more fading you will see. Tattoo fading can also continue for up to one year after your final treatment.

Factors that can affect how many laser tattoo removal sessions you need

There are several factors that can influence how long the laser tattoo removal process takes. These include:

  •       The age of your tattoo – new tattoos are more challenging to remove
  •       Density of the ink – the deeper and denser the ink, the more sessions you will need
  •       Size of the tattoo – larger tattoo will take longer to treat
  •       Location – you will need more sessions the further away the tattoo is from your heart
  •       Skin health and age – you need a healthy immune system to process the ink

Remember, the healing process is also important. It can take your skin a few weeks to fully heal after each session. This makes the process of removing a tattoo longer, but it also ensures that your skin does not become damaged or scarred.

You will only have follow-up laser treatments as part of your treatment plan every 10 weeks.

How much does laser tattoo removal cost?

There is no set cost for everyone when it comes to laser tattoo removal. This is because the cost of your tattoo removal treatment will depend on how many sessions you will need to remove your specific tattoo.

When you visit our studio for a consultation, one of our technicians will sit down with you to create a bespoke treatment plan for you. This will include how many sessions you will need to fade or remove your tattoo and the treatment cost.
